Why this, why here

A lot of good ideas stop at the edge of campus.

The ideas are already here

Research gets published. Class projects get graded. Clinicians work around the same problem every week. The School of Information and the AI in Health Lab are full of work that could be a company and almost never becomes one.

What's missing is a path

Not talent, not ideas, not even money. A student with a strong project and a researcher with a working prototype face the same gap: nobody has shown them how to tell an idea from a product, or who to build it with.

So we're building one

A program that starts in the classroom and the lab and ends with a team. Short enough that a whole class can try the first step. Serious enough that the ones who keep going come out with a company.

Who it's for

Four groups, one program.

Students

Bring an idea or a project. Learn to evaluate it like a founder would, then find out if it holds up.

Faculty and researchers

Bring a lab project or a prototype. Get a team to build it and a clean path from the lab to a company.

Clinicians

Bring a problem from practice. Get matched with builders who can turn it into something that runs in a clinic.

Affiliates

Bring customers, mentoring, pilot sites or capital. Get first look at what comes out of the iSchool and the lab.

The plan

Three stages. Each one earns the next.

Every stage is optional, and most people will stop after the first. That's fine. The program is built so the first step is easy and the last one is real.

Learn

A short, self-paced curriculum on the difference between an idea and a product, and how to judge whether an opportunity is worth pursuing. Drawn from the methods that have worked at UT Austin for years.

Test

Bring your idea to a live session where it gets a real review in front of peers, with guests from the lab, the clinic and the investor side. Walk out knowing whether to pursue it, change it, or park it.

Build

For the ideas that hold up: form the team, sort out who owns what, and start building with the program behind you. Founders keep the company. The program helps it get started.
